Former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan has started his journey home.

His body was on Monday returned from Geneva to his native Ghana in a solemn ceremony.

Lying in a casket draped in the blue UN flag, he was accompanied by his wife, Nane Maria Annan, his children and senior officials from the world body.

This marks the start of official mourning for the former UN secretary-general.

The career diplomat and Nobel peace laureate, the first UN leader from sub-Saharan Africa, died on August 18 after a short illness at the age of 80.

Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo, was among the dignitaries at the arrival ceremony.
