PHOTOS: Akwa Ibom Gets Own Airline, Ibom Air
Akwa Ibom State has its own airline now.
The state's air fleet, Ibom Air, was launched on Wednesday and it was witnessed by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
At the commissioning of the airline, the Governor of the State, Udom Emmanuel, said that in the fleet were three aircraft, but that only two were available at the moment.
After he alighted from one of the planes that landed at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, the Governor Emmanuel told a gathering witnessing the feat which he described as a monumental achievement in the state, that the aircraft, C-FWNK, were only six years old.
It has a sitting capacity of about 90 persons and constitutes the newest and modern fleet of the Canadian airbus.
According to him, Akwa Ibom is the only state in Nigeria that runs a state-owned airport and an airline.
"This is the only state across the country that runs and operates an international airport. We are the only state that runs a Category Two run way.
"I want to reassure the former governor, Obong Victor Attah that very soon, the MRO will be a place that will maintain fleets of aircrafts across the country.
“We are running Ibom Air as a business, paying particular attention to Akwa Ibom people,” he said.
"Ibom airline will operate routes that will give preference to Akwa Ibom people," he said.
The Governor further highlighted that the government would soon launch one of the best terminal buildings in Nigeria.
He said his administration had focused on development of the economy on land, air and water.
The remaining aircraft will arrive on Friday, Governor Emmanuel also told the gathering.
He further said plans for the Ibom deep seaport would soon commence operations before the expiration of his second term in 2023.
The Senate President, who unveiled the aircraft, commended the leadership qualities of the state governor.
He has been able to create an environment viable for development, he told the gathering.
"We are proud of you in the PDP family that you are one of us," Saraki stated.
