The Supreme Court of Nigeria has notified the Peoples Democratic Party that it would give its ruling on a suit between the party, Ali Modu Sheriff and 4 others.

Leadership tussle had started in the party after some members of the party removed Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the party's chairman in a controversial Port Harcourt convention held in May 2016.

A caretaker committee was set up headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi a former Governor of Kaduna State, but Senator Sheriff has continued to act in the capacity of the chairman of the party.

The tussle had divided the party into 2 factions - one headed by Sheriff and the other by Makarfi.

There have been contradictory court-orders and judgments that favour the two factions at different times on the leadership of the party.

The Supreme Court’s ruling that will hold on July 12 is expected to put to rest the controversy over who the chairman of the party is.

The court ruling is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local time.
