PDP, APC Supporters Clash In Abuja
Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly clashed at the headquarters of the PDP in Abuja on Thursday.
The incident happened as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar submitted his Nomination and Expression of Interest forms to contest for the PDP presidential primary.
Trouble started after one of Atiku’s supporters was beaten black and blue by APC supporters outside the secretariat.
The development led to stampede, as security men who guarded the secretariat were overpowered by supporters who forced the gates open to seek for shelter.
It took the intervention of police who fired multiple gunshots into the air to disperse the crowd.
An eyewitness, who is also a supporter of the Presidential aspirant, spoke with journalists on how the incident started.
He said, “The fight started when some thugs with the APC posters attacked us along the Michael Okpara Street opposite the party secretariat.
“The APC supporters started singing songs against the supporters of the former Vice-President. The supporters of Atiku retaliated, before fight broke out.
“We, the supporters of Atiku, said that the thugs came to disrupt the event.
“We believe that the thugs were sent to disrupt the event and cause crisis to put Atiku in a bad light.”
Normalcy was later restored, while Atiku submitted the forms and left the secretariat.
