Former Super Eagles captain Kanu 'Papilo' Nwankwo is 42 years old. 

Kanu took to his Twitter page to celebrate his birthday. The former African footballer of the year is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated football icons in Africa.

Bounce News looks at some facts about the football icon.

1. Family

Kanu Nwankwo in 2004 got married to Amarachi in what is still known as one of the biggest weddings in Nigeria.

The couple tied the knot in the star-studded event at Owerri in Imo state. 

The wedding was attended by teammates of Kanu Nwankwo and celebrities from around the country. The cute couple celebrated their 13th year anniversary in 2017.

Kanu Nwankwo's marriage is blessed with three beautiful children. Two cute sons and a very beautiful daughter.

2) Career

He started out his professional career with Iwuanyanwu Nationale in the Nigeria Professional Football League in the 1992/93 season after impressing at Holy Ghost College in Owerri.

He played for Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Ajax, Inter Milan, Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth in his career that spanned 20 years.

3) First 

Kanu is the first and only Nigerian footballer to be named African Player of the Year twice.

He captained the Dream Team, Nigeria’s U23 team, to win Gold at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics in the United States of America, the first time a team outside of Europe and South America had won the title.

Kanu was also a member of the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’, the Arsene Wenger-led side that went a whole season undefeated in the English Premier League.

4) His Very Large Heart

He suffered from a heart defect that was diagnosed back in 1996, and he underwent surgery the same year. 

In 2000, he used his fame and money to create the Kanu Heart Foundation that aims to help children with heart diseases.

5) Investment

In 2012, Papilo opened his own training grounds called Kanu Sports Center. It has a football field (obviously), a pool, an outdoor gym and a basketball court.

In 2015, he opened a photo studio and modelling agency by the name of Papilo, which includes a recording studio and video production outfit.

He also owns a football school in Canada for children aged 17 and below.  Kanu also sponsors a football team from his hometown called Papilo FC.
