He has been governor of Oyo state before and he wants to return to the Agodi government house in 2019.

His name is Adebayo Alao Akala. He is the governorship candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Oyo state.

While in the past he always belonged to the winning team, or at least be a contender, this time, he is swimming against the tides in a less fancied party, against the incumbent and other stronger parties.

He knows his fate lies in the fairness of the election and the role the media plays in the entire process.

So, Mr Akala has tasked media practitioners to use their power to deepen democracy and good governance in the country.

He made this call on Wednesday, November 21 while speaking as a guest lecturer at the World Television day held by Nigerian Union of Journalists Ibadan Chapter which was tagged 'The roles of television in deepening democracy.'

The former governor who was represented by his media adviser, Mr Abraham Ojo said that the media should promote national unity and avoid reporting sensational and commercialized news that can destroy the nation.

He stressed the need for training of media practitioners especially on peace and conflict as well as developmental journalism

“The media need to refuse to be used as instrument of incitement to conflict and war but promote good governance to sustain democracy.

“They should not allow themselves to be used by those who want to destroy the image of others and should always adhere to the ethics of media practice in Nigeria,” he said.
