Ondo Health Workers Invade Governor's Office, Protest Unpaid Salaries
Song of solidarity and display of placards by health workers had on Tuesday led to a partial disruption of official activities at the state governor's office in Alagbaka, Akure.
It was a protest by staff of the Ondo State Emergency Medical Services Agency, ODEMSA to ventilate their anger and frustration over the non-payment of their 12 months salaries and complete neglect by the state government.
Leader of the group, Samuel Adeyoriju said they were protesting because the government has left them unattended to for the last one year.
“We are protesting our 12 months unpaid salaries. The verification has been done for almost two months, yet nothing has been heard and they wanted us to be going to the office.
"We have been going to the office, but no money to run our personal lives. We can't fend for our families again.
"Presently, we are in dilemma on the outcome of the protest, we don’t know the next action and that is why we want them to pay our 12 months salaries from June 2017 to June 2018.” he said.
Another protester, Foluso Michael said the state government treats them like they are not part of the state medical workers.
"What we do is life-saving but unfortunately, we are not treated like regular workers in the state. We have been hoping and struggling to survive without any succor from the government.
"If they want to throw us out of our job, we don't care but they should at least, pay our 12-month salaries." He said
Reacting to the protest, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro said the payment was delayed because their appointments are not regularised, adding that the system does not accommodate their payment.
“I sympathise with them on their ordeal, but that is the situation for now. Hopefully, very soon, the situation will be over, and everybody will be home and dry,” he said.
The agency was established by former Governor Olusegun Mimiko in 2010 to provide emergency medical services to accident victims on the highway across the state.
