If you are a regular visitor to the palm wine joint or a habitual drinker of the local wine, this is not the best of time to visit Irun- Akoko in the Akoko Northwest area of Ondo State.

Palm wine tappers in the area are currently angry, talking tough and from all indications, they don't seem ready to return to the feet of palm trees.

Their grievances were centered on the sudden disappearance of one of their colleagues, Jimoh Ilofa.

Aged 55, Jimoh reportedly went to tap on Monday but did not return home.

Palm wine dealers and drinkers in the community are not finding it easy to tag along with the downward slope of business as well as enjoyment derived from the local wine.

One of the sellers, who operates a palm wine joint in the town, lamented how her customers turn back whenever she tells them there is no supply.

"The palm wine tappers refused to tap since their colleague has been missing. They said he was kidnapped. Other said he must have been used by ritualists, but the bottom line is that, he is nowhere to be found and they refused to supply.

"The man who used to supply me told me that he has not gone to farm since the incident happened and he doesn't know when he would go.

"What pains me most is the way my customers turn back whenever I tell them there is no palm wine. Even the situation has affected the bush meat that I sell because when they drink palm wine, they will definitely buy the bush meat."

Also, a customer who regularly keeps a date with the joint said he too has gone on a break since there has not been supply of palm wine.

"Palmy (as it is locally called) is the real deal now. What will I go and do at palmy joint when palmy no dey?" Said Chima Sunday.

The palm wine tappers were said to have taken the decision in protest of the slow response from security operatives.

Some of the residents however attributed their action to the fear of similar experience.
