Ondo Assembly Crisis: See Who Takes Over As Speaker
A member of the House of Assembly in Ondo State, Olamide George, has taking over as the Speaker after the Speaker and his Deputy were impeached.
He was elected by members of the House after they impeached Bamidele Oloyelogun, and his Deputy, Mr Iroju Ogundeji, few minutes into plenary on Friday.
The former leaders were accused of misconduct and abuse of office.
Eighteen out of the 26 lawmakers voted in the impeachment process.
Oloyelogun and Ogundeji were accused of abuse of office and gross misconduct.
The new Speaker, George, is representing Akure North Constituency.
He was the Chairman of the House Committee on Youth, Sports, Information and Orientation.
It is not the first time that the leadership of the Ondo House of Assembly will be impeached.
In May this year, the Deputy Speaker was impeached on allegations of misconduct, after a fallout with the Speaker, but he was later reinstated after Governor Rotimi Akerodolu intervened.
One of the members of the House representing Idanre Constituency, Tuyi Akintimehin, said the speaker and his deputy could not account for how 1.5 billion Naira which was spent from the assembly's funds.

However, loyalists of the former Speaker, who believed that he and his deputy were impeached because of their close affiliation with the state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, dismissed the claims.
Thugs have also invaded the House of Assembly, but police officials and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had already been deployed to the premises to maintain law and order.
