Table Toppers

It has been a fierce battle for supremacy between Jos club Plateau United and Lagos based MFM FC.

Either Plateau United or MFM FC will be crowned champions of the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after final matches are played on Saturday.

With one point separating both sides, Plateau United will be crowned NPFL champions if they beat Enugu Rangers at the Rwang Pam stadium.

Pundits have predicted that Plateau United will win the tie and lift the trophy. The Jos club has not lost a game at home this season, winning 15 and drawing just two home matches.

Rangers beat Plateau United 1-0 in the reverse fixture played in Enugu on May 3, 2017, and it is expected the Kennedy Boboye handled side will want to revenge the defeat, especially with the trophy at stake.

For MFM, it has been a miraculous journey this term. After struggling to survive relegation last season, the Lagos club became a force a reckon with, and has now booked a place in the CAF Champions League for the first time.

Of 37 matches played so far, MFM FC were able to win 19 games, lose 13 with 5 draws.

They will travel to take on Elkanemi, who need at least a draw in the final game of the season, to comfortably escape relegation.

The Maiduguri club has not lost a game at home this season, and the Fidelis Ilechukwu tutored club was able to win the reverse fixture 3-0 at the Agege Township Stadium on April 9, 2017.

Relegation fight

It has also been a long battle in the relegation zone, with two teams – Remo Stars and Gombe United already confirming their place in the lower tier Nigeria National League (NNL).

Remo Stars and Gombe United are already relegated, but two clubs out of Rivers United FC, Katsina United, Sunshine Stars, Niger Tornadoes, Abia Warriors, Shooting Stars, Wikki Tourists, and ABS would be relegated as just three points separate these teams.

Abia Warriors, who have 50 points, will host Rivers United, who have managed to garner 52 points. A win for the Umuahia side will push the Port Harcourt club down and at risk of relegation, if results of other matches hurt them.

Another relegation battle is between Niger Tornadoes (51 points) and Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) who has 50 points.

With one point separating both clubs, a win for either side will brighten their chance of playing in the NPFL next season and possibly drop the other club into relegation, but results of other matches will also determine that.

Sunshine Stars, currently on 51 points, will be hoping to beat already relegated Remo Stars and seal their place in the NPFL next season.
