Three teams are jointly occupying the top spot on the Nigeria Professional Football League table after Match Day 1 games were concluded across the country over the weekend.

Akwa United, Abia Warriors and Niger Tornadoes who all secured 2-0 wins are the early leaders in the NPFL.

Abia Warriors under their new coach, Rafael Everton recorded a 2-0 home win against last season’s league runner-up Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) FC at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Ndifreke Effiong netted a brace in the 52nd and 66th minute for the Warriors.

In Uyo, Akwa United secured a comfortable 2-0 win against former champions Rangers International at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Kelly Kester scored on his league debut for Akwa in the 40th minute before Dennis Nya sealed victory in the 67th minute of the game.

In Ilorin, Niger Tornadoes posted the biggest performance of the opening weekend; going to Ilorin to beat Kwara United 2-0.

Also, the reigning NPFL champions, Plateau United got off their title defense to a bright start on Sunday as they secured an away win in Lafia over Nasarawa United.

The Solid Miners posted a 1-0 win over their hosts at the Lafia City Stadium.

It is the first time since 2013 that a titleholder will win their first game of the season.

Elsewhere, FC Ifeanyi Ubah defeated newly promoted side, Yobe Stars FC 2-1 in Nnewi while Heartland FC played out a scoreless draw with Sunshine Stars of Akure at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri. 

Rivers United FC on their part defeated visiting El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri 1-0 in another entertaining game.
