If you are nursing the idea of becoming a maize farmer, yes you can do it but unlike rice, do not expect a law banning importation of maize into Nigeria soon.

The Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobri, on Thursday said there was no such law.

He made this known when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development in Abuja.

They asked to know why maize importation was being allowed into Nigeria, Lokpobri said it might not be unconnected with three million metric tonnes deficit the nation suffered from its local production in 2016.

He noted that importation of the food item was not among the 41 others banned.

On his part, the representative of the Comptroller General of Customs, Aminu Dan Galadima, informed the committee that maize importation was not illegal.

According to him 500 million Naira was realised as import duties from it in Port Harcourt alone this year.
