Governor of Ebonyi State David Umahi sounded like he was moved by the death of a journalist who lost his life after an armed robbery attack.

Umahi on Monday blamed the death of late Vice Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ebonyi State Council, Samuel Nweke on night travel.

Nweke and his colleagues were travelling from Ogun State to Ebonyi, but were attacked just after arriving Ebonyi.

The Governor disclosed this when he paid condolence visit to the bereaved family of the late staff of Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation, EBBC.

“There is no amount of police that can stop things like this. It is like hit and go.

“As a governor, by 9pm, I am already apprehensive coming from Enugu State to Ebonyi State, not to talk about coming from Awka down to this place. It is unthinkable.”

He also visited Okutu Peter and Tony Nwizi, who are receiving treatment in the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

According to the Governor, it was unthinkable for the journalists to embark on night travel.

Umahi doled out a total of six million naira to the affected journalists for medical treatment and upkeep of the late journalist’s wife and children.

“We said they should give the father N500,000, the mother N500,000 for them to start something, and the wife N1,000,000 to start up something.

“We further directed that through personal effort, Engineer Nweze should overtime buy a bus to give to the wife.

“We will give her Technical Assistance, so that she will be able to carter for the children on monthly basis.

“The other ones, we have taken up their medical bills, and we directed the release of N500,000 to their immediate families to enable them buy drugs or fruits or as the case maybe.

“There is no amount of police that can stop things like this. It is like hit and go.

“People can come and hit and go back to the village. There is nothing you can do about it. So, it is all about security, we are doing very well.

“But they are things you do not do. Even as governor, we were to finish by 1am and the other man say come from there you have all security, I said no, I will not because armed robbers have equipment that is more than that of the convoy.

“The loss of the life of one person is not a good omen for me, even if my life is secured and the policemen are killed. So, I do not endanger the lives of people.

“Even as the governor by 9pm, I am already apprehensive coming from Enugu to Ebonyi State, not to talk about coming from Awka down to this place. It is unthinkable,” he said.
