#NigeriaDecides2019: Gunmen Kill Two Policemen On Election Duties In Rivers

Two police officers deployed for elections in Rivers state have been killed.

Signs that Saturday's Presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers State is going to be bloody has started emanating few hours to the rescheduled elections.

Two police officers deployed for elections in the state have been killed in Botem, Tai Local Government Area of the state.

The officers in the rank of Sergeants were ambushed at Botem, along Ogoni axis of the East-West road on Friday.

Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni said the armed men launched a surprised attack on the officers, shot them and took away their rifles.

DSP Omoni who said the Police is on the trail of the gunmen added that security has been intensified in that area to avoid further attacks.

He, however, noted that the Command has escalated its mandate to security officers to be alert especially during the period of the elections.

“I can confirm that sad incident to you that that incident happened. Two of our men were killed in Botem, Tai LGA in an ambush. Other officers tried to repel them but the armed men escaped.

“Our officers from the Tai Division swooped into action but before they got there the boys had escaped. They combed the bushes but couldn’t find them.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the incident and we are working to find the boys and bring them to book.

Recall that armed men in a Hilux Truck also shot and killed a Police officer at the Rukpkwu checkpoint on the eve of the postponed election Friday last week.
