#NigeriaAt58: Oyo Spent Five Days Celebrating Independence
For many Nigerians, it was Independence Day on Monday and that’s it. But in Oyo state, the celebration started days before October 1.
Not necessarily because the people of the state have a lot to celebrate but the government thought it was wise to make them celebrate.
So, they set aside a 5-day programme with the theme "Enhancing Our Diversity For National Development" which started on Friday, September 26 and ended on October 1, when the rest of us celebrated the Independence Day.
A lot of primary and secondary schools were at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba to mark the event, with the Deputy Governor, Moses Alake Adeyemo representing Governor Ajimobi.
Asides the usual congratulatory messages, the highlight of his speech was the justification for the programme and its theme.
"The theme for this year’s celebration 'Enhancing our diversity for national development' is apt and calls for deep reflections.
"As a nation with common heritage, history, race, social ties though heterogeneous in languages, dresses, food we should leverage on the opportunities offered by the unity in our diversity for the common good of all.
"The people of Oyo State and Nigeria should see our diversity as a unifying force to achieve peace, unity and national development and not as a threat to our co- existence," he concluded.
There was also a football novelty match, march past and cultural displays.
