The success story at the Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships has encouraged the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) to bid for the hosting right of the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

The AFN President Ibrahim Shehu Gusau who commended the Delta State Government for saving Nigeria by hosting the African championships and building a legacy stadium for the purpose, disclosed the intention of Nigeria to host the world at a press conference in Asaba on Saturday.

The resolve of the AFN to bid, he said, draws from the express consideration of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) to take the world championships to Africa in 2025.

“We are thanking the Governor, His Excellency, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, and the government and people of Delta State for saving Nigeria an embarrassment by agreeing to host the African Championships. As you know, there was a mix up at the initial stage about the host city but Governor Okowa stepped in saved Nigeria, also doing it in grand style by building a legacy stadium that will continue to support sports development in Nigeria. He has put not only Asaba and Delta State but the whole of Nigeria at the centre of global attention. On the strength of the success of this event we going ahead to bid to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships,” Gusau announced...
