Organizers of the Nigeria Pitch Awards have expressed shock and sadness at the untimely death of Deji Tinubu, one of the pioneer supporters of the awards. 

Tinubu, who was reported to have slumped and died while playing football on Wednesday 25 January 2018, had been a supporter and a voter on the platform. 

Since 2012 when the maiden press conference of the awards was held, Deji Tinubu had remained committed to uplifting the standard of football in Nigeria through the organisation of a credible reward system.

President of the Awards, Shina Philips, expressed shock at the news of Deji Tinubu’s sudden passing.

‘He was full of life the last time we met’, Philips said. ‘His death will be a very big loss to many athletes, sports lovers and sports journalists, his immediate constituency’.

‘He was one of our top guests and speakers at the press conference heralding the Nigeria Pitch Awards in July 2012 in Lagos. Since then, he has remained committed to the awards and to Nigerian football’, Philips said.

Philips said Deji Tinubu’s death comes at a time when the nation needed his experience and expertise most as the country attempts to up the standard of sports.

Already, the burial arrangement for Deji has commenced with a candlelight procession on Sunday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Deji Tinubu will be committed to mother earth at Vaults & Gardens, Ikoyi, Lagos on Tuesday, January 30th.

Tinubu is survived by an aged mother, Bintu Tinubu, wife, Yemisi and two children.
