The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has warned Nigerians to be wary of the circulation of Fake News that has increased since Nigeria began its general elections.

Twitter is on fire on Sunday morning. #AtikuIsWinning and #BuhariIsWinning are trending at the same time, leaving one in awe of who was winning 'gan-gan'.  

Can two persons be winning in a football match at the same time? 

The Chairman of INEC briefed the media on Sunday and the issue of fake news was raised by one of the journalists.

He appealed to social networks to be discrete with the way they report the outcome of the election.

He cited posts that have talked about a particular candidate winning and the difference the individual would find when the post was clicked for further read.  

Should There Be Censorship? 

Professor Yakubu emphasised that INEC would never support censorship of any kind, a statement that stressed its position on internet censorship in Nigeria.

"We believe that the antidote to fake news is more openness and transparency and that is why we are holding this meeting to explain and clarify every information and answer your questions.

"I will only appeal to persons who operate at that level to be extremely discrete with the kind of information that they put forward.
