At least 1,000 All Progressive Congress APC members in Kontagora, Niger State have decamped to the Peoples Democratic Patty (PDP).

Kontagora is the hometown of the governor of the state, Sani Bello.

The mass defection trails the zone’s adoption of Mohammed Sani Duba for senatorial election come 2019. The zone comprises eight local government areas.

The weekend’s defection was one of the first since the APC grabbed power in 2015.

Some of the defectors had earlier moved from PDP to APC in 2015 protesting alleged imposition of candidates.

But they decided to return to PDP after they were allegedly abandoned by the APC.

Duba contested for a House of Representatives seat in 2015 but lost to the APC candidate. He, however, remained in the PDP after the defeat, a development that culminated in his adoption for the second time at the weekend.

The Chairman PDP Niger North Senatorial District, Yahaya Ability and the Chairman of Kontagora elders forum, Abubakar Sule Tukura both posited that more defectors will continue to come to PDP because the ruling APC has failed to fulfill campaign promises.
