Jose Mourinho believes United’s rivals Liverpool would have sold their Brazilian star if Neymar had not transformed the market.

“Neymar changed everything,” Mourinho told The Times.

"If the biggest transfer in history had still been [Paul] Pogba, I think Philippe Coutinho would now be in Barcelona at £101 million.”

The La Liga giants offered as much as £118 million, having generated huge funds from Neymar’s sale to Paris St-Germain.

However, that meant clubs could demand huge fees from Barcelona, although Liverpool maintain they never even put a price-tag on Coutinho.

Barcelona claimed after the window shut that Liverpool had quoted £185 million.

Even that figure would have more than doubled Pogba’s fee.

Coutinho ultimately stayed, though, and must now prepare to return to action for Liverpool.

Liverpool and United will go head-to-head on October 14 at Anfield in the Premier League.
