The number of political parties in Nigeria has increased to 46.

This follows the registration of the African Peoples Party (APP).

The APP had earlier applied for registration in 2014 but was denied by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Promoters of the party had gone to court to challenge INEC’s decision.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in its ruling on the matter directed INEC to issue the association a Certificate of Registration.

INEC on Wednesday complied with the ruling but failed to disclose the identities of those behind the new party.

The commission had in June registered five new political parties.
