A  39-year-old man lost his life in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Monday night after a hospital allegedly delayed in treating him after he was attacked by some hoodlums.

The victim, Progress Dennis from Usokun in Degema Local Government Area was stabbed severally while on his way from thanksgiving service on Monday.

The incident happened along Atillery road.

When taken to Datta Clinics, after two other hospitals rejected him, the doctor on duty reportedly requested an initial deposit of 25, 000 before he could be attended to.

His sister was contacted and she made a bank transfer of 30, 000 but the hospital reportedly insisted on receiving an alert before they will attend to his wounds. He died a few minutes after.

News of the incident generated widespread anger in the state on Tuesday with Port Harcourt residents calling for the hospital to be picketed.

However, the police on Tuesday evening waded into the matter by inviting the doctor on duty for questioning.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the command, Nnamdi Omoni, told our correspondent that the command is doing all within its power to mitigate against a break down of law and order.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has reportedly invited the management of the hospital for questioning.
