N13.5M Monthly Allowance: Shehu Sani Is Right – Senate
Do you remember the story about a senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani disclosing in an interview that senators get 13.5 million naira a month apart from their salary?
The senate has confirmed that he was telling the truth.
The senate even revealed that Sani was a bit conservative about the figure since the allowance actually amounts to 45 million naira quarterly.
The senate also insists that the information about the salaries and allowances of senators was never kept secret.
According to Senate Spokesman, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the figure Sani gave out about running cost of the offices of Senators was contained in various line items and expenditure heads of the budget of the National Assembly which has been made public.
He insisted that Senator Sani did not disclose anything new.
Sani had during the interview with the NEWS magazine revealed that apart from the allowance, senators also get 700,000 naira monthly.
This had triggered social debate about the jumbo pay of the salaries and it was said to have annoyed other lawmakers.
But Abdullahi dismissed any insinuations that Sani’s colleague was unhappy with him.
He argued that if people had looked critically at the budget of the National Assembly which has since been made public, they would have seen that various line items like travelling, medicals, consultancy and the rest were captured in the budget.
