Power is slipping from Africa’s longest serving leader, Robert Mugabe.

On Wednesday, the men of Zimbabwe's Defence Force seized power, beginning a process that may end the long reign of the 93-year old Mugabe.

Hours after the intervention, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma said he spoke to Mugabe on Wednesday, and that Mugabe told him that he was confined to his home but that he was fine.

In a statement, the South African presidency added that Zuma, in his capacity as chair of the Southern African Development Community, was sending special envoys to Zimbabwe to meet with Mugabe and the Zimbabwean Defence Force, which has seized power in Harare.

Mugabe and his family are reportedly in detention in his home, even as wife and assumed succesor, Grace is reported to have been out of the country in Namibia when the military stormed the residence.
