MOVIE REVIEW: 'Lara And The Beat' Shows Seyi Shay Belongs In Nollywood
Some Nigerian musicians have decided to test the acting waters, from Banky W in The Wedding Party to Chidinma in The Bridge.
While their performances have not been bad, they haven't been outstanding either.
Unlike these stars, however, singer, Seyi Shay's screen debut on Lara and the Beat reveals that Nollywood might have just found a new star.
The producers who gave us Banana Island Ghost (BIG), give movie fans a musical romantic comedy that delivers a female-led story with humor and heart.
Lara and the Beat is a coming of age movie about the young and beautiful Giwa sisters who are caught in the center of a financial scandal with their late parents’ media empire.
The sisters lose everything and must learn to rebuild their lives, and save their family’s name.
The movie also stars Somkele Idhalama, Chioma Akpotha, Chinedu Ikedieze, Uche Jombo, Lala Akindoju, Bimbo Manuel, Wale Ojo, Shaffy Bello, Saidi Balogun, DJ Xclusive, Toni Tones, Deyemi Okanlawon, Demola Adedoyin, Folu Storms and Sharon Ooja.
Seyi Shay takes Lara Giwa, the lead, and starts off as a selfish and entitled child, and slowly reveals the many layers of her character.
Her charisma and performance sprinkled with an impressive comedic timing makes her character tick.
Seyi Shay even outshines her fellow music star and supporting lead, rapper, Vector.
Other characters that you will not forget in the movie are Chioma Akpotha, Somkele Iyamah Idhalama; who plays Seyi Shay’s sister and Kemi Lala Akindoju.
Tosin Coker's skillful eye and directing style flourishes in the glossy cinematography, as he seems to bring out the best in all the characters including the newbies - Vector and Seyi Shay.
The only technical issues are with the film's editing, as some scenes go on for too long.
Unlike most musicals, Lara and The Beat does not sacrifice a good narrative for great songs, and manages to juggle both, making it one of the better Nollywoood movies you will see this year.
Lara And The Beat is currently showing in cinemas across Nigeria.
Bounce News scores the movie - 4
