Mixed Feelings As Gov. Ajimobi Claims APC's Oyo South Senatorial Ticket
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state has clinched the ticket of the All Progressives Congress for the Oyo South senatorial district in a one-sided affair.
The incumbent, Senator Soji Akanbi, made it to the Senate on the platform of APC in 2015 but the hope of his constituents for continuity was dashed in the early hours of Wednesday, October 3 in Ibadan when Governor Ajimobi picked the party’s ticket against the wish of Akanbi's supporters.
It became known that Ajimobi was eyeing Akanbi’s seat after he picked the nomination form of the party and insisted on having the ticket.
The APC National Working Committee thought they could make the governor see the wisdom in letting Akanbi retain his seat on the party’s platform considering his loyalty when many of his colleagues decamped and what has been adjudged a good performance by him.
After mediating in the issue, the 2-term governor remained adamant but several party members were unaware of this when they stormed the venue of the election chanting praise songs of 'SOJ lekansi'.
Sources told Bounce News that an order allegedly came from the governor that he was still contesting and must be voted for and that was when supporters realised the game was over.
Both Senator Soji Akanbi and Governor Abiola Ajimobi were absent at the election venue, while Dr. Fola Akinosun was present as the main opponent but obviously, he posed no threat to Ajimobi's ambition after getting just 168 votes to Ajimobi's 2,659
Unconfirmed reports have it that many of Akanbi supporters were in tears when Ajimobi was declared winner of the Oyo south senatorial ticket.
The chairman of the electoral panel, Chief Ademola Seriki, announced the result.
Seriki said that the exercise, which started around 6:30pm on Tuesday, was delayed due to the late arrival of voting materials from the national headquarters of the party in Abuja.
The Oyo South senatorial district spans nine local government areas, which are Ibarapa North, Ibarapa East, Ibarapa Central, Ido, Ibadan North, Ibadan South-East, Ibadan South-West, Ibadan North-East and Ibadan North-West.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to fall deeper into crises due to the many controversies trailing their primaries across the states and alleged failure to allow fairness in their processes.
