John Mikel Obi's hopes of escaping relegation from the Chinese Super League got a boost on Sunday as the Nigerian star helped his team, Tianjin Teda to a rare away win over Obafemi Martins' Shanghai Shenhua.

Mikel, who last weekend led Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup in Russia, put up a good display for Tianjin Teda as they beat their hosts 2-1 on Sunday.

Both Mikel and Martins played for 90 minutes in Sunday's game and Mikel actually got a booking in the 73rd minute of the keenly contested tie.

It was Senegalese striker Mabaye Diagne that got the two goals for Tianjin Teda while the only goal for Shanghai Shenhua came off the boots of Mao Jianqing.

With Sunday's victory, Mikel and his Tianjin Teda teammates are now two points away from the drop zone.
