Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel became a hero on Tuesday after report emerged that he received call of his father’s kidnap four hours to the kickoff of Nigeria vs Argentina 2018 World Cup game.

Mikel, in a statement released by his publicists, revealed he did not tell coach Gernot Rohr or any other person so as not to distract the team.

“I could not even inform the coaches or NFF staff, and only a very tight circle of members my friends knew.”

He went on to captain Nigeria in the game the three-time African champions lost 2-1 and consequently crashed out, with Mikel and other players playing their hearts out.

Nigerian police in Enugu state announced that Pa Obi has been released, and Mikel now has a message for the security outfit.

“I would like to thank the police authorities involved in ensuring the safe return of my father after the ordeal this week.  

Mikel also “thank everyone for their kind word of support” and added that his father is recuperating with family.

It will be the second time Pa Obi will be kidnapped. The first was in 2011 where he spent about 10 days in kidnappers' den.
