The Super Eagles duo of John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo had their hands burnt in the opening day of action in the Chinese Super League.

Both Nigerian stars, who left the English Premier League for the big money in China, finished on the losing side as their respective clubs were thrashed in the season opener.

Mikel and his Tianjin Teda teammates were beaten 2-0 by Shandong Luneng on Saturday.

The Super Eagles capatian was handed a starter's role and the former Chelsea star played all 90 minutes but neither his presence nor experience could save the day for Tianjin Teda who opted to keep out their other Nigerian acquisition Brown Ideye from action.

Ideye made a deadline day switch from Greece to China.

It was worse for Ighalo as his team Changchun Yatai suffered a 5-1 bashing in the hands of Shanghai SIPG FC.

Changchun Yatai took a surprise lead in the first half through Fan Xiaodong but Brazilian striker Hulk equalized through a penalty before another Brazilian Elkeson de Oliveira Cardoso grabbed a hat-trick and Wu Lei finished put the icing on the cake
