Mikel Escapes Relegation In China
Aside leading Nigeria to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russia, Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel now has another reason to celebrate.
His Chinese club side, Tianjin Teda narrowly escaped relegation over the weekend after battling to a 2-0 victory over Beijing Guoan at Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium.
It was looking like a hopeless situation for Tianjin Teda at the beginning of June no thanks to their shambolic run of form.
However, since Mikel returned from injury, he stepped up to inspire his side to a run of four consecutive wins which effectively helped steer the club clear of relegation waters.
With two games to go, Tianjin Teda are now with 28 points; nine more than Yabian, who occupy the second and final relegation spot so they are guaranteed safety.
Mikel has just one goal to his name but his contribution in the 11 games he featured in cannot be underestimated.
