He had been searching for a good job to better his life and family. Fortunately, he got employed by Dangote Cement and was due to resume on October 8.

That day did not meet him alive.

The clarion call for sanitization of cultural activities in the society is becoming deafening by the day.

Those who are seen as custodians of culture appear to be getting more powerful than the culture itself and perhaps, the laws of the land.

This seems to be the only illogical reason that can explain the death of one Femi Makanjuola in the hand of a masquerade in Akure, Ondo State.

Makanjuola, 30 was scheduled to resume his new job at Dangote Cement group, Benin City on Monday October 8 before he was allegedly stabbed to death by the masquerade on Saturday at Olomoyeye street, Gaga, Oke Aro, Akure.

An eye witness confirmed that the masquerade and his accomplice stabbed the man after he refused to give them money.

According to the deceased's mother, Mrs. Monisola Ilesanmi, there had been an issue between the masquerade and his son before now, which had already been resolved.

"There was already an animosity between my son and the father of the masquerade few weeks ago and we have settled it with the believe that the matter had already been forgotten.

"When I learnt my son was stabbed to death by the masquerade, I found it difficult to believe because we were still in the mood of celebration of his new job which he was to resume on Monday in Benin. Why my son, why me, why now that things are getting straight for my son that he would be killed?" She lamented.

The police spokesman in the state, Femi Joseph confirmed the incident and said the police have commenced preliminary investigation into the matter.

According to Joseph, the chief priest of the masquerade has been arrested while his costumes have been confiscated.

A relative of the deceased, High Chief Oladimeji Abitogun said the incident portends a serious danger to the survival of tradition.

Abitogun who denied that the masquerade is from the palace or a royal family, called on relevant authorities to put in place requisite measures that will ensure the excesses of certain individuals who hide under the guise of traditions are curbed.

His remains have been deposited at the state specialist hospital pending the conclusion of police investigation.
