What could have led an able-bodied man to steal yam from widows?

Mr. Eze Ojioko connived with his two wives in Agubata-Agbaja village in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State to ransack barns and steal yams of villagers.

Bounce News gathered that their targets were widows, and the modus operandi of the thieving trio was to go to farms belonging to the villagers and uproot their yam tendrils.

They were apprehended by the villagers of Agubata-Agbaja in Izzi Local Government Area (LGA) for allegedly stealing 160 tubers of yam from the barn of Nwinyimagu Ogah in a neighbouring village.

A village source, Mr. Sunday Nwokoro told Bounce News that Mr. Eze and his wives after stealing the tubers of yam, were unable to carry them home at once, and when the man came back to carry the remaining ones, he was apprehended red handed by the villagers.

He disclosed that the thief has been terrorising the village and neighbouring ones, stealing both yams and other properties in the area.

"He hails from Ndunweze community but carries out his nefarious acts even in nearby villages. He also targets widows and steals their properties.

"But one night, around 2am, he stormed late Mr. Nwinyimegu Ogah's barn and carried some tubers of yam, thereafter, came back and in attempt to escape with the remaining sack filled with yam tubers, he was caught red handed,” he stated.

Mr. Ojioko, Bounce News, gathered has been a thorn on the flesh of widows in the area as he was accused of having the comprehensive names of widows whom he visits one after the other, carting away their produce, and for those who have planted their yam, he would go to their farms at night, harvest the yam tendrils and replant them at his own farm at Amike-Aba.

It was also alleged that he recently visited the yam barn of one late Mr. Ogbonna Nwogbaga with a torchlight and first threatened the poor widow by pointing the torchlight in her eyes before invading her barn.

The villagers arrested Mr. Ojioko and paraded him at the village town hall where he was said to have confessed to various crimes and how he trailed widows to their homes.

The Agubata Village Head, Mr. Sunday Nwokoro condemned the act, noting that Mr. Ojioko has not only committed an abominable act, but soiled his hands by stealing from widows.

He pleaded with the appropriate authority to ensure that the yam thief, who he said is cooling off at Iboko Police Division, faces the full wrath of the law to serve as deterrent to others especially during this planting season.
