She was just 7 years old old when the man she calls father allegedly began to sexually abuse her. For seven years now, she has faced the assault.

Ibrahim Mohammed, 56, was brought before a Kano Magistrates’ Court on Friday on a two-count charge of procuring minor and incest.

The prosecutor, Aluta Mijinyawa, told the court that the accused lives at Hausawa Quarters in Kano.

Mr Mohammed allegedly started sexually assaulting the girl, who is his step-daughter, in 2010 when she was just 7 years old.

“He has been having sex with the minor since the death of her mother in 2010. The victim was 7 years then, now a 14-year-old girl.”

Mijinyawa further told the court that the girl, having now grown up “to know what is good and bad,” resisted the father, who threatened to harm her.

The girl, whose name was withheld because she was a minor, had reported the father at Metro Police Station in Kano. He was arrested and charged for procuring of minor and incest.

The prosecutor highlighted that the offences contravened sections 275 and 390 of the penal code.

After the testimony of the prosecutor, who is a police officer, the accused denied the charges and pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Fatima Adamu, then ordered that Mr Mohammed be remanded in prison and adjourned the case to September 12, for further mention.

It is not all anguish for the girl, however, as a women group in Kano, Hotoro Women Development Association, had offered to sponsor the education of the girl.

The association’s Project Manager, Dr Zainab Nagee, said they had asked the court to allow the girl be assigned to her grandmother, “to enable her resume normal life and go back to school, which we promise to sponsor.’’
