It was all looking doomed for Nigerian striker Simeon Nwankwo and his Crotone teammates going into the last day of action in the Italian Serie A.

Their destiny was off their hands as recording an unlikely victory over high-flying Lazio would not have been enough to save them.

However, luck shone like a million stars on Nwankwo and his Crotone teammates as they earned their Serie A survival.

Crotone beat Lazio 3-1 and Empoli fell 2-1 at doomed Palermo.

Although the 25-year old Nigerian was an unused substitute in the game, the result means he would have a chance to fight for a starting shirt in a Serie A side.

Crotone, who were promoted to the Italian top flight this past season, finished in 17th with 34 points, two points ahead of Empoli, who go down along with Palermo (26 points) and Pescara (18 points).

The striker scored three goals in 21 appearances this season.
