LESSON: Never Attack Electricity Workers
In a country where there is hardly electricity and you hardly get the worth of what you pay for, disconnection is an annoying exercise.
But attacking innocent workers of the distribution companies who are also just earning their salaries is a no-no, no matter how cheated you feel.
For allegedly stabbing an officer of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) with a bottle, a 22-year-old generator repairer, Oluwadamilare Temenu, has to face the law.
On Monday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos being tried for breach of peace and assault.
The prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 3, at his residence.
He said that the accused assaulted the complainant, Mr Oluwaseyi Amao, while performing his duty.
“The accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by obstructing the complainant from performing his duty,” he said.
Ogu said that the complainant was attacked for disconnecting the accused’s public power supply for owing over N300, 000.
“When the accused saw the complainant climbing the pole, he threatened to deal with him, if he dare disconnect his power supply.
“When his power supply was disconnected, he ran inside his apartment, brought out two bottles and smashed them on the ground.
“The complainant quickly jumped down from the pole on sighting the bottles and ran for his life.
“The accused chased him, caught up with him and stabbed him on the head and neck.
“The complainant’s colleagues held the accused and he was taken to the police station,” the prosecutor said.
The offences contravened Sections 166 and 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, while Section 173 prescribes three years jail term for assault.
Following his plea of not guilty, Magistrate J.A. Adegun granted him N100, 000 bail with two sureties.
He said the accused should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Further hearing in the case has been fixed for Jan. 28.
