The campaign flag-off of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Lagos on Tuesday ended abruptly as violence broke out mid-way into the well-attended programme.
At least two persons were feared dead while several people were injured in the violence, including three journalists who sustained minor bullet wounds.
The rally was held at Skypower field, Ikeja, Lagos.
Among those that were hit by the gun was the group political editor of Nation newspaper, Emmanuel Oladesu, New Telegraph correspondent, Temitope Ogunbanke, Ibile Television cameraman, Abiodun Yusuf, among others.
A number of persons were also beaten at the rally.
Trouble started at about 1:30 pm when Lagos governor, Akinwunmi Ambode was delivering his speech. Suspected rival groups of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) shot each other.
Hoodlums took advantage of the occasion as they robbed people of their phones, money and bags.
Musiliu Akinsanya also known as ‘Oluomo’ was beaten with sticks by thugs.
The situation sent panic across the campaign ground as party members ran in different directions to avoid being hit by bullets being fired indiscriminately by the hoodlums.
Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, who was making a speech, had to leave the stage immediately and was guarded out of the venue together with his deputy, Idiat Adebule, the APC governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu, and other prominent members of the party.
The campaign, which started by 12:30 pm, had party bigwigs in attendance, excluding the national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu.
