At least 12 persons died while over 24 others were rescued after a building collapse in Ita Faji area of Lagos Island.

Most of the victims of the incident that occurred at about 10:00 a.m. were pupils of a primary school in the building occupying the 3rd floor.

Rescued efforts continued from morning till dusk and emergency management agencies' officials confirmed the number of deaths recorded.

Most of the rescued victims were taken to the Lagos General Hospital, Marina.

The list of survivors was not immediately available and this resulted in the crowding of the hospital by parents and family members who trooped in to confirm the state of their children.

Residents of the area said the building was over 30 years old and that a vacation warning had been issued prior to the collapse.
