Security has been beefed up at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

This follows threat by unions in the aviation sector to shut down the airport by midnight on Monday.

The organised labour had threatened to shut down all airports nationwide to press home their demands for the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (UCL) had called for the indefinite strike over non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage.

Their affiliates in the aviation sector, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, the National Union of Air Transport Employees and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals had during their meeting on Monday agreed to support the movement.

Bounce News correspondent who visited the airport on Monday observed that stern looking and armed security officers were stationed at vantage positions while some were sighted on patrol.

At the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) also know as MMA1 of the Lagos airport, security personnel from the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Aviation Security (AVSEC) were seen stationed at different strategic locations.

Our correspondent also noticed an usual heavy security at the international terminal of the airport.

Paul Igene, Chairman of all the unions in the aviation sector told Bounce News on Monday that his members would ensure full compliance with the industrial action.

He added that all airlines operating in/out of Nigeria airports shall be affected if the strike holds.

On the heavy presence of security at the airport, he said this was done to intimate members of the unions from enforcing the industrial action.

He, however, said his members are fully committed to comply with strike until otherwise directed.
