Chairman of the Senate committee on Poverty Alleviation, Senator Malam Ali Wakili is dead.

He died at the age of 58.

The lawmaker, who was one of the guests at the wedding of the daughter of Aliko Dangote, in Kano on Friday, died in Abuja on Saturday.

He reportedly slumped at his residence in Gwarimpa, Abuja and was taken to a hospital where he was attended to immediately.

The senator, who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, represents Bauchi Central in the Senate

He joined politics after retiring as comptroller in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Wakili obtained his bachelor’s degree in arts in 1982 from the Bayero University Kano (BUK).

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who confirmed Wakil's death tweeted this message on his Twitter handle.

“Enroute to celebrate with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and family on their daughter’s wedding, I just heard about the passing of my friend and colleague, Senator Ali Wakili. I am on my way to the Wakili house to pay my respects to his family,” he wrote.

“Inalilahi wa Ina Ilaehi Rajiun. It is the Almighty Allah (SWT) that gives life, and it his Him that takes it away. I pray that the Almighty Allah grants the dear departed Senator a place in Al Jannah Firdaus.”
