Since their loss during the 2016 Governorship election, members of the PDP in Ondo state have been struggling to find their political feet.

As if their loss was not enough, the planned exit of former governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has dashed hopes of any renaissance.

Recently, leaders of the party in the state pleaded with the immediate past governor to revive the party instead of dumping it for another political platform.

The Chairman of the party in Ondo State, Clement Faboyede made the appeal while receiving a report from the PDP Support Group.

“It would be in the interest of the party and the supporters of the former governor to remain and salvage the party instead of dumping it for another political platform.

“Mimiko is our leader until he officially leaves the party. We are appealing to him to stay and provide leadership for our teeming aspirants.

“We hope he will rescind the decision to leave the party. But if he decides to leave the party, we will move on without him.”

The plea, however, triggered an outrage by members of the party across the state.

Isaac Olamiju, a PDP member from Ile- Oluji in Oke -Igbo local government area of the state said Mimiko is no longer relevant in PDP.

"What relevance is he to the party? What has he done differently since he joined the party? Even if he remains in the party, it will still not make any difference. So he can go if he wants to go, the party will move on."

Tola Akinyele, also a PDP member believes it is a failure on the part of their party leaders to be pleading to someone who has already perfected all plans to defect.

"Why should they beg him to stay in the party? I must tell you that am disappointed in our leaders especially, our chairman, Clement Faboyede. This simply shows they cannot hold the party together without Mimiko.

"But unfortunately for them, they can't have him again. He has made up his mind and that is what the party needs for now." He said.

On her part, Yemisi Ajijala, a party member from Idanre posited that Mimiko has been responsible for all the problems confronting the party.

"Since he joined PDP, the party has been riddling with one crisis or the other. All the bigwigs of the party left because of him because he tried to impose his doctrines on them. No consultation with the old members, no regards for anybody.

"We lost the presidential election in our state in 2015 because of him. We also lost the 2016 governorship election because he tried to impose his stooge on us who was not popular with the people. Now he wants to live after he had reduced the party to nothing and some people are begging him to stay. To stay for what? Is it to sell off the remnant of the party?" She asked rhetorically.

There are claims that Mimiko and his supporters have concluded arrangement to move to Labour Party following some disagreement over the national leadership of the party.

He is alleged to be at loggerheads with Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State and his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesome Wike.
