Nigeria's last military ruler is marking his 75th birthday.

Some past and serving national leaders in Nigeria are wishing him well as he celebrates.

One man that have benefited from the decision of General Abubakar to hand over to a democratically elected president is Goodluck Jonathan who served as president between 2010 to 2015.

The "boy who once had no shoes" prayed for the man he described as a ‘General of the people’.

Part of the message written to celebrate the icon, said: “Our current democratic experience would not have been possible if General Abdulsalami Abubakar had not surrendered himself to be used by God as a pencil in the Hand of the Creator.

"All Nigerians owe a debt of gratitude to this democratic icon and as you celebrate your 75th birthday today, my family and I join millions of Nigerians and lovers of Nigeria to wish you a happy birthday”.

Jonathan highlighted that it is fitting that Abubakar’s birthday comes two weeks after Democracy Day.

“Just as you planted the democracy tree that is now giving us shade, may God in His infinite mercy continue to shade you with good health, long life and pleasant experiences. Happy Birthday General of the people,” he prayed.
