John Boyega's 9 Billion Naira Nollywood Film - Blessing Or Curse?
British-Nigerian actor, John Boyega, wants to shoot a 'low budget' movie in Nigeria with 9 billion Naira.
The 10th richest actor in Hollywood for 2017, says he plans to invest between 20 and 25 million dollars to tell Nigerian stories in a film.
"We’re developing a few Nigerian stories and choosing one which makes sense budget-wise.
"We’re probably looking at an indie budget of $20-$25 million dollars." he said in the interview.
Meanwhile, Nollywood director, Daniel Oriahi who spoke to Bounce News about this acclaimed indie movie said the cost of production is 8 times the profit made in Nollywood in 2017.
"Most likely the movie is for an international audience because Nollywood does not have the capacity to contain a film of that magnitude.
"Wedding Party made 500 million Naira to become the highest grossing film ever.
"If you add the profit made by other films in the cinemas, it would not be more than 500 million, might not even reach.
"How can you invest 9billion Naira in a 1 billion Naira industry?" he said.
He pointed out that if he can invest some of the money in creating distribution channels for Nollywood, it would help the industry.
"To have an international appeal he will be getting stars from places like Hollywood and the Chinese movie industry, with maybe one or two Nollywood actors. John is a business man, he understands the problems of Nollywood," he added.
