‘James Bond’ Keke Rider Ends Up In Near Tanker Explosion Incident
Since auto rickshaw popularly referred to as Keke in Nigeria replaced commercial motorcycles in some states, passengers have some times found themselves in a situation that is more precarious than that of someone on a commercial motorcycle.
In Bayelsa State, Keke riders are everywhere and it has become a job opportunity for most unemployed young men.
Some ride this three-wheeler machine like they were part of a James Bond movie cast.
Their overwhelming quest to make more trips per day often result in accidents and one happened over the weekend.
Now, four persons are
in critical conditions as a result of a ghastly motor accident which involved a
fuel tanker, two tricycles and a Hilux van.
Churches were in session and the major roads within Yenagoa, the state capital, were less busy.
Narrating the circumstance, an eyewitness said a fuel tanker was moving in full speed and suddenly, two tricycle drivers conveying passengers, tried to manoeuvre their ways between the tanker and a Hilux.
That manoeuvring did not end well.
There was a loud bang, a scream and a screeching sound. The tanker hit a Keke while the tanker was also hit from behind by a Hilux before it finally stopped at the middle of the road.
Another tricycle involved ran under the back tyre of the tanker and was squeezed.
"The accident victims, who were trapped under the tyre of the tanker, cried out for help.
"Some Naval officers from the Central Naval Command (Camp Porbeni) brought some evacuation equipment which was used to rescued those trapped under the tanker," the eyewitness narrated.
During the rescue mission, the tanker, which was fully loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), began to spill.
Fearing an explosion could occur, men of the State Fire Service were alerted. They responded promptly and also took preventive measures which averted possible explosion.
"I saw the first tricycle driver overtake the tanker. He, however, didn't maintain his speed, so, the tanker hit him twice from behind," another eyewitness told Bounce News.
She explained that while that was happening, the second tricycle driver tried to overtake the same tanker but ended up in front of its back tyres as the tanker had slowed down.

The Keke was crushed.
Victims who eyewitness said were in critical shape
were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Ovom and a nurse at the hospital, who simply identified herself as Abigail, confirmed to
Bounce News that the victims were in critical situation.
She also revealed that one of the tricycle drivers smelt of alcohol.
"His breath smell of alcohol.
"They are all in critical conditions.
"May God deliver them" she prayed.
This accident came at a time that men of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Bayelsa State were sensitising both private and commercial drivers on the dangers of not being careful while during this Yuletide.
