There was a jail break at Ikot Ekpene Prisons on Wednesday, with 47 inmates escaping to the free world.

Some were not so lucky, however, as 14 have been rearrested and taken back to prison on Thursday.

Akwa Ibom state Controller of Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Alex Oditah announced the recapture of some inmates, adding that steps are being taken to forestall future occurrence.

“Some inmates escaped from Ikot Ekpene prison on December 27, at about 12.45 p.m. To ascertain the total number of those that escaped we have to do headcount.

“We discovered that 47 inmates had escaped from custody. Immediately a search party swung into action and 14 were recaptured,” Mr. Oditah said.

The controller added that four of those who tried to escape died from bullet wounds when they tried to overpower prisons officers on duty.

He added that some of the prisons officials who sustained different degrees of injuries, were receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
