A broadband connection no matter how weak the signal, is only a dream for very many people in Nigeria, especially those who live in the rural areas.

But that is about to change.

This is because the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, NIGCOMSAT and the Nigerian Postal Service, NPS have concluded plans for the provision of broadband services to rural communities across Nigeria.

The Head of Media Relations Unit at NigComSat Limited, Stephen Kwande, said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

The Nigerian Communications Satellite constructed by a Chinese firm, Great Wall Industry Corporation of China – NigComSat-1R – will be deployed for this service while NIPOST outlets across the country will serve as the contact centres.

Kwande said both organisations had set in motion the process for the realisation of the project, expected to increase broadband penetration across the country.

The service is also expected to help NIPOST in the rollout of a number of services aimed at financial inclusion of un-served citizens in rural communities across the country.

“NIGCOMSAT Limited and the NIPOST have set in motion efforts to ensure that broadband penetration in the country is achieved through the deployment of NigComSat-1R services while using NIPOST infrastructure all over the country,” said Kwande.
