Two families have been thrown into mourning on a day Nigerians are marking the country's 57th Independence Day anniversary.

An auto crash on Ajaokuta/Ayangba Road in Kogi State left 2 persons dead on-the-spot on Sunday.

The Kogi Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Olusegun Martins, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Martins said the accident involved a car and a mini-bus and occurred at the Ogbabo/Ojodu-Idah junction on the road.

Martins explained that the accident was due to a head-on collision between the car, with vehicle registration number (Abuja) ABJ 647 KC, and the mini-bus with vehicle registration number (Abuja) RSH 931 HF.

The dead, a man and a woman, were among the 13 persons involved in the accident, he said.

Eleven others sustained varying degrees of injuries and they have been taken to the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, for treatment.

The corpses were also deposited in the mortuary of the same hospital.


According to the Sector Commander, the road has been cleared of the obstructions by FRSC personnel, to allow for free flow of traffic.

Investigations into the cause of the accident will commence soon, he added.
