Otu Emmanuel (21) and Uchenna Abani (24) have been accused of breaking into James Olughu Nkama’s resident on 15th June, 2018, abducting two of his children - Chinyere Igwe (8) and Ibiam Igwe (4).

They took the kids to their enclave in the forest and held them hostage, expecting their parents to pay ransom.

Emmanuel told Bounce News how he joined the group.

“My name is Otu Emmanuel. I was called by Emeka on my way going to the hospital to see my mother who is sick. I have been looking for money to pay her medical bills. So, he said that I should wait for him at a bridge there.

“When he came, he told me there was a business on ground. I told him I do not want to be part of the business, but he told me that I will be cooking for them. I did not participate in the burning of the house.

“I agreed to join them because I was in need of money to go and pay my mummy's medical bill, because the doctor wanted to do surgery on her," Otu Emmanuel said.

The police command paraded the suspect for kidnapping two minors in Oso Edda Afikpo South Local Government council area.

These suspected kidnappers had last month stormed the children’s parents’ home, killed their grandfather, lit fire in the apartment before whisking the kids away.

“That fateful day, 15th June 2018, at about 002 hrs, a gang of five armed robbers invaded the residence of Mr. James Olughu Nkama at Oso Edda, Afikpo South L.G.A of Ebonyi State and shoot sporadically in the air, damaged all alumaco windows, ceiling and gathered all electronics within the household at the center of the seating room and set them ablaze.” ASP Odah, PPRO said.

"The hoodlums also attacked and killed one Joseph Olughu Nkama, age 104 years, father to Mr. James Olughu Nkama and robbed him the cash sum of seventy thousand Naira.

"The kidnappers gained entrance into the house of James Nkama, kidnapped one Chinyere Igwe age 8 years and little Ibiam Igwe age 4 years to unknown destination.

"The armed bandits tied the minors, blindfolded them and kept hostage at their hideout and was demanding five million Naira ransom from the victims’ family. While negotiations was still on, on the 1st of July 2018, we took operatives of Anti- kidnapping Squad (AK) to a community in Afikpo North L.G.A of the state where the first suspect Otuu Emmanuel age 21yrs, was traced and arrested and he has made useful statement to the police.

"On 02 July 2018, a combined team of both Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AK) stormed the kidnappers den, a thick forest along Amangwu road, Afikpo south to locate the victims and other members of their gang and one Uchenna Abani age 24 was arrested while three others escaped."

In an interview with the suspects, Otuu Emmanuel said he played the role of informant and he got involved because he needs money to pay off his mother hospital bill while Uchenna Abani was in charge of the children's well-being.

But Uchenna Abani in his part, said he knows nothing about the kidnap but accepted to know the leader of the gang, Emeka.
