But January can be a double edged sword, on the one hand people are all spent out after the expenses that December brings. At the same time, it also offers some of the juiciest discounts available as traders try to offload their old stock to make way for new ones.
So, what's a gal to do when she needs to pimp her wardrobe but is low on cash? Invest in a few key pieces is what.
If you're looking to improve the feel of your wardrobe for the new year, here are a few things you should consider to bring about the needed change.
1. High-waist bottoms
Not in black. In blue, pink or any vivid bright colour you like.
A pair of well-tailored high waist trousers and/or skirt is a timeless classic which can be paired with everything from corporate shirts to ruffle blouses or even t-shirts, and when it's in a bold colour, it's even better. You'd be surprised at how much more clothes it'll seem like you have just because you have the right bottoms to play around with.
2. Sleeveless jackets
Sleeveless jackets have been all the rage for a while now and for good reason too. They're stylish and versatile instantly bringing needed pizzaz to any outfit. So ladies, definitely get yourself one of these.
3. Ankara pieces
Ankara has blown up quite a bit over the last few years. Moreso, they're not just relegated to church wear or aso ebi, ankara is making its way into everyday pieces from skits, jackets and even accessories like shoes and bags. Make yourself an ankara skirt or two, or even a fun blazer and watch your wardrobe come alive.
4. Matching sets
Kimono sets are great for 2 reasons; they're can be rocked as a pair or separately. Considering that we're all about slaying on a budget, this is a win-win for us.
Neck pieces can be very helpful in transforming an otherwise boring outfit so you may want to consider investing in some fun pieces. The right bag and shoes can also instantly power up an outfit so even if you can't afford to change your entire wardrobe, you can get a very unique bag and/or pair of shoes.
6. Don't be afraid to mix and match
Finally to really make this work, you shouldn't be afraid to mix and match both colours and styles, especially if you can get away with it at work or school. Play around with styles and definitely don't shy away from a pop of colour. Throw on a t-shirt over high-waist trousers, pair your denim with a camisole and throw on a chunky neckpiece. Nothing is off limits this year.
Now go forth and slay!
