A team of the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce got more than it bargained for on Tuesday.

The team made up of about 7 men were attacked when they visited Ajao road, Ikeja in an attempt to arrest suspected miscreants.

Bounce News learnt that the taskforce team acted on a tipoff about the unusual convergence of over 100 Nigerien and Chadians in clusters along Ajao road/ Obanta junction.

They usually hosted by a certain Alhaji Haruna, a Nigerien who sells cigarette and other petty provisions.

Haruna it was learnt has operated the store for many years.

On sighting the taskforce team, the  foreigners ran in different directions. The team, however arrested a few others who also tried to flee the area.

Eyewitnesses narrated to Bounce News that the suspected foreigners, who had escaped regrouped to prevent the taskforce from taking those arrested.

It was gathered that the foreigners overpowered the team and in the process seized a gun from the officers.

Haruna was said to have returned the gun to the MAN Center Divisional Police station before he was subsequently detained by the operatives.

Commenting on the incident, the CDA Chairman of the area, Yemi Adebowale who expressed his fears on the sudden invasion of the community by the foreigners said: “The sudden surge of the Nigeriens in the community since late last year calls for concern. They are a big threat to our community. We have about two occasions where they gang up to beat innocent members of the community”.

However, the DPO MAN Center, Tanaruna Anthonia, debunked the claim story that the miscreants seized the gun: “They didn’t seize any gun. We still have Haruna with us under interrogation. We need to reduce the numbers of these foreigners in this neighborhood.”

When contacted the Lagos State Police PRO, Chike Oti  said he has not been briefed on the incident.
