Herdsmen: Ondo Community Threaten Showdown Over Police Plan To Jail Farmer
Indigenes of Arigidi-Akoko in Ondo State are currently warming up for a massive showdown with the Nigerian police.
This is in reaction to the pronouncement of police image maker, Femi Joseph that a farmer who killed a Fulani herdsman would be charged to court.
It was gathered that the suspect, Ajayi Bayode murdered the deceased, Abubakar Alidu while trying to defend himself against the dreaded herdsmen.
A source said, “A hot argument ensued between them on the farm. This led to a fight and the deceased and his colleagues attacked the farmer with machetes.”
“To defend himself, he (suspect) brought out his gun and shot the herdsman.”

However, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph said Bayode, who is currently receiving treatment at the state hospital, Ikare Akoko, would be charged to court for murder.
Reacting to the statement, some indigenes of the town threatened that if the suspect is jailed, there will be break down of law and order.
Taye Aduragbemi, a farmer in the town said they have been reporting herdsmen activities on their farmlands to the police over the last two years and nothing has been done.
"We have had series of brutal experiences with herdsmen on our farmlands which we always report to the police.
"There was a time that we sent a delegation to the state government to come to our rescue over incessant invasion of fulani herdsmen and nothing has been done till date.
"But when they heard that one of us mistakenly killed a herdsman in the process of defending himself, they were quick to label him a criminal. If Bayode is sent to jail, there will be a serious crisis in the state."

Also, Mr. Felix Adetoye said they sent a message to Aare Gani Adams who also hailed from the town to quickly intervene in the matter.
"As things stand, what these people are telling us is that fulani can come and kill us on our land, but we must not touch them. That is the simple interpretation.
"If nothing is done by Gani Adams and our brother goes to jail over this matter, then they should be ready to send the entire Arigidi to jail because we will make our town ungovernable for this government.
"We have made our intention known to our kabiyesi and nothing will change our decisions.” He said.
